I’m sure by now you have heard about GMOs or Genetically Modified Organisms and their potential impact on the environment and our health. GMOs are created when scientists merge the DNA of one organism with that of another to create organisms with more “desirable” traits.
Some of the most common GMOs in Canada are corn, soya, canola, and sugar beets. You may think that you don’t eat many of these foods on a regular basis, but the truth is that most of these foods are used as ingredients in many of the foods that we eat daily. GMOs can be found in baked goods, granola bars, canned soups, frozen foods, cereals, sweetened juices, and pop. Animals fed GMO corn are also sources GMOs. This extends the list to include meat and dairy products.
Humans have only been exposed to GMOs for about 20 years, so scientists don’t have enough data or research to fully understand what the full risk potential will be for years to come. Current research suggests that GMOs pose a definite risk to our health and can affect immune function, can produce inflammation in the body, and can even be linked to tumors in the body.
Currently, there is no law in Canada regulating the labeling of products containing GMOs. As a country we need to be looking out for the health of future generations and work with our government officials to instate laws that will protect us from the dangers of GMOs.
Fortunately, more awareness is leading to better education, allowing the general public to make better decisions and watch for food labels indicating that products are GMO-free.
What can you do? Create awareness about GMOs at your work or business. Educate your employees by hosting a nutrition workshop and focus on various hot nutrition topics. Encourage your staff to have a GMO-free week at work to create awareness and promote healthy eating.
