This year I have the pleasure of celebrating my son’s discharge from the Canadian Forces. As much as I was proud to see him serve, as a mother, I’m happier to see him move on with his life.

My son leaves the army with more than 3 permanent injuries in the last 4 years without being deployed outside his own training grounds. I’m sure some soldiers have similar stories, and others much more devastating.

Ensuring beyond basic health care, that our soldiers are provided with long term access to services when their injuries are permanent and disabling, is absolutely necessary. The new government promised;

“Budget 2016 proposes to restore critical access to services for veterans as well as ensure the long-term financial security of disabled veterans. Budget 2016 also proposes measures to honour the service, sacrifice and accomplishments of those who served in the military.” I hope they keep their promise.

Like many others, my son is leaving the Canadian Forces with everyday reminders of his time in service. He has talked about being an advocate or motivational speaker to empower his ill/injured veteran friends. An alternate real life humanitarian mission and a new vocation is waiting for my son outside the doors of the Canadian Forces, and I’m happy for him.

Take the time to attend a Remembrance Day event this year, hear some stories from our veterans about their participation around the world and give thanks for our freedom. Remember to support their health & safety during and after servicing our country by volunteering your time or donating to various Veteran causes.
