Do you sit at a desk all day? Do you suffer from stiffness and lower back pain? Up to 85% of the workforce will experience lower back pain during their lifetime. Reference.
According to the Canadian Chiropractic Association, a major contributor to this statistic is a sedentary lifestyle. Much of the workforce sits behind a desk for 8 hours per day, commutes to and from work daily and doesn’t engage in sufficient exercise.
Pilates is an excellent low impact exercise that focuses on strengthening the core muscle groups. It focuses on muscle strengthening and stamina and aids in tissue oxygenation. With many exercise modifications available, Pilates is an excellent program for beginners or for those that have sustained injuries in the past. (Check with your health care practitioner prior to starting any exercise program and ensure that your Pilates instructor is aware of any limitations.)
By stretching and strengthening core muscles, many people who take regular Pilates classes report better flexibility, greater muscle tone, and less muscle tension, leading to reduced lower back pain.
Employers can encourage employees to engage in exercise programs by having weekly exercise classes that employees can attend before or after work and/or offer gym memberships as part of your health benefits package.
