Once a month, Fournier Health will be featuring a documentary or book that has the potential to influence our health in a positive manner.
For the month of January we felt it was fitting to feature ‘Hungry for Change’. I think a lot of us are ready to make changes to our health, but often we don’t know where to start. Watching health related documentaries can give us the knowledge and motivation to take the first step in the right direction.
In my opinion, one of the most intriguing statements made in ‘Hungry for Change’ was,
“People are overfed but they are starving to death.”
Chemicals, such as monosodium glutamate (MSG), high fructose corn syrup, food colouring and artificial flavours are added to our food supply because they naturally cause the consumer to develop a physiological response that leads to addiction. These chemicals excite parts of the brain that cause the body to gain weight, causing our bodies to increase in size, while still being undernourished.
Due to the increase in sugar consumption, we are also being bombarded with “empty” calories that when consumed, rather than nourish the body, contribute to an increase in appetite and waist size.
How can we stop this cycle? The simple answer is to avoid these foods completely. From years of experience, we know that can be easier said than done. The real answer would be to slowly start making the changes that we outline in our daily blog posts. Making one change at a time leads to a more sustainable lifestyle that will guide you to better health in the future.
