We have discussed different forms of physical exercise and the benefits of these exercise programs. The health benefits of physical exercise are obvious but what about exercise for the brain? Research has shown that there is a significant correlation between an active mind and long-term brain health.
Regular mental stimulation is part of a health plan targeted to maintain a healthy mind. The best forms of mental stimulation can include the following:
Be creative – Spend time developing your creative skills. Play an instrument, sing, paint, draw, or redecorate a room in your home.
Puzzles – Word searches, crossword puzzles and Sudoku puzzles can all contribute to a sharp mind.
Language learning – Learning a new language creates new neurological pathways and has been shown to delay the onset of dementia by four to five years. Source
Reading – Read at least one new book per month. The best type of books to read will provoke deep thoughts and reflection.
Active Social Life – Join a group of like-minded individuals to discuss business topics. Approach the group with the intention of personal and professional growth.
Proper Sleep Habits – Develop a nightly routine that promotes healthy sleep patterns. Turn off the TV or other distractions an hour before bed and use that time to relax and prepare the body for restful sleep.
Reduce stress and meditate – Don’t carry the stress of work home with you. To help minimize the effects of stress, try using meditation to quiet the mind to feel more centred.
