Probiotics could be considered the new multi-vitamin. They are becoming increasingly popular and for good reason.  Probiotics are healthy bacteria that populate the intestines and contribute to the function of the gut.  The gut is responsible for food digestion and nutrient absorption, but it is also intricately tied to the immune system. A properly functioning gut flora can help the immune system fight off common colds and flus and can also aid in the recovery or prevention of other inflammatory based diseases.

You may have noticed that probiotics are popping up in all kinds of food products on the market but they aren’t all created equal.  We must understand that probiotics are living bacteria that can be damaged or killed by processing and long shelf lives.  In addition, the amount of probiotics in most products is often almost negligible and therefore provides relatively no benefit to the consumer.

How Can You Improve The Health of Your Gut?

Some foods can have a negative impact on the healthy bacteria in the gut including: sugar, refined grains, high-fructose corn syrup, processed foods, and a diet high in animal products (meats, eggs, cheese, milk).  Other foods like fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes, nuts, seeds help feed the good bacteria and allow them to populate the gut.

The most effective way to ensure that you getting a healthy dose of probiotics is to supplement with a high quality product.  Head to your local health food store for a great selection.

It is also incredibly important to supplement with probiotics if taking antibiotics as antibiotics can disrupt the healthy flora and allow for “unhealthy” bacteria to take over in the gut.

I hope this helps you gain a healthy gut!
