We all know that coffee is a staple of any office. It can be smelled brewing the second you walk through the door in the morning. But is coffee the best choice for your health? Organic coffee is fine to be enjoyed in moderation but relying on coffee or other caffeinated beverages to get you through the day is a recipe for disaster.
Last week we talked about Exercising Your Brain and today I’m going to add to that by saying that caffeine is a stimulant that affects brain chemistry and function. When consumed daily caffeine has the potential to cause problems with the digestive system, can contribute to issues with the cardiovascular system.
On the contrary, consuming herbal teas support the body naturally and can improve focus, immune function and health.
Today’s recipe uses a medicinal mushroom that grows in our local forests called Chaga. It’s growing popularity allows us to source this dried mushroom in health food stores. To make a homemade Chaga tea you need to purchase small chunks of dried Chaga that are steeped in water.
Chaga’s main attribute is its ability to be an adaptogen in the body, meaning, it looks for ways that your body needs support to help maintain homeostasis in the body.
Chaga Tea
12 cups of water
1 tablespoon dried Chaga chunks
2 cinnamon sticks
5-6 cardamom pods
In a crock pot or large stock pot place water, Chaga, cinnamon and cardamom. On low heat bring water to almost a boil and let simmer for 2-3 hours. For stronger tea, let steep longer. As tea is consumed, keep replenishing water for 3-4 days, reusing the chaga until for its full benefit.
