What would happen if we replaced every other coffee shop with a fresh juice bar? The fact that there is a coffee shop on every other street corner speaks volumes to how we are culturally dependent upon coffee and sugar-filled convenience foods to maintain energy levels throughout the day. How about our cafeterias? How many workplaces serve coffee for their employees or have vending machines with coffee?
This week we are challenging our community at Work & at Home to examine how their energy levels are tied to substances such as caffeine, sugar, and nicotine. Do you rely on coffee or tea to start your day or do you use sugar as a “pick-me-up” throughout the day?
Years of relying on these energy boosting substances creates false energy levels in the body. In order to properly energize your body, you first need to eliminate these foods and replace them with healthy, natural alternatives. The key is to maintain consistent blood sugar levels throughout the day by choosing whole foods, AND decaffeinated drinks.
Start off your day by drinking a glass of lemon water followed by a fresh juice or a protein rich smoothie. (stay tuned for our Try This Tuesday blog tomorrow for fresh juice recipes). Have that one or two cups of coffee in the morning and then switch over to juice or water throughout the remainder of the workday. Herbal teas are also a good substitute for caffeinated drinks. By doing so, your production level shouldn’t taper off later in the shift.
Be mindful of your energy levels throughout the day and make conscious decisions to eat whole foods when feeling tired or unfocused, especially when at work, rather than reaching for another cup of coffee. Overtime, you will re-train your body to use nutrient dense foods for energy instead of sugar and caffeine.
