What are you eating? If you had to name three main food groups that you consume, what would they be?
Many people would name grains, meat and dairy. Unfortunately, this diet causes a great deal of inflammation in the body, as the body tries to break down these heavy substances into more manageable components.
The problem is that once these grains, meat and dairy, fast foods, processed foods and most convenience foods are digested, they leave an acidic residue in the body.
This means that the body must pull buffering minerals from its bones, teeth and organs to neutralize this acidic effect.1
It is important to balance the effects of these acid-forming foods with foods that promote an alkaline environment, so the body does not leach its own nutrients to protect itself.
What are the best Alkaline Foods?
You guessed it! Plant based whole foods, most vegetables, fruits, and certain spices.
For example, Avocados have a pH of 8.0 and are so versatile1. They can be enjoyed in many different ways. You can make guacamole, add it to your smoothies, use it instead of butter and make chocolate pudding! (See the bonus recipe below!!)
Cayenne Pepper is an anti-bacterial spice that has a pH of 8.5. It helps to improve circulation, lowers blood pressure and assists in the elimination of toxins!1
It may surprise you, but lemons and limes are excellent sources of alkalinity. Although they taste acidic/sour, they actually leave an alkaline residue in the body. It is great to start the day with a glass of water with lemon squeezed into it. This will help to detoxify your body and break your overnight fast.
Watermelon has a pH of 9.0! It is filled with electrolytes and nutrients, and is amazing to enjoy on a hot day in the summer. Bonus!
Why does pH even matter?
Inflammation thrives in an acidic environment. Viruses, bacteria and chronic disease fair much better in a body that is slightly acidic, so it is important to help our body become slightly alkaline to ease some of its stress.
Avocado Chocolate Mousse
Mash 1 ripe avocado in a bowl
Add 3 tbsp raw cocoa powder
2 tbsp pure Canadian maple syrup
Mix together and add more cocoa to taste. Top with raw cashews or pistachios, banana or strawberry slices. Be creative!
This is an excellent recipe to use as pudding, a replacement for icing, or with a fresh banana instead of Nutella!
